Fondly addressed as SNR, Dr. Surendra N. Reddy, has been instrumental in the evolution of Sankara Eye Hospital from a Cataract surgical Centre to a multi specialty tertiary care Institution and a post graduate training center. A graduate of Rangaraya Medical College, Kakinada, AP. India, SNR served as a GP under the Ministry of Health, Algeria until 1984, first 4 years in the Northern Mediterranean terrain and the final 2 years, by his own choice, opted to the rural population of Fenoughil, a remote commune in the deep SAHARA desert.
On his return to India in mid1984, he completed ophthalmology training at the JJM medical college, Davangere, Karnataka in June 1987. He developed a passion for Retina, and had initiation to the subspecialty while working as a fellow and then as a junior consultant at THE EYE RESEARCH FOUNDATION, Chennai until 1990.
Subsequently moved to Melbourne, to train as a Fellow in the diseases and surgery of the Retina and vitreous under Dr.James D.Cairns at The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital,until mid 1994.
Upon his return to India in mid 1994, Dr SNR served as a visiting consultant at the MV diabetes specialty center, Apollo Hospital and Chennai Kaliappa Hospital, until opting out of private Medical practice in mid 2003.
A chance meeting of SNR with a former colleague and the managing Trustee of the Sankara Foundation in 2005,came as an eye opener to the world of under privileged people in dire need of sight Restoration. With a high level of self motivation and personal commitment to the cause of the poor, SNR joined the Sankara Eye Hospital, Pammal in Nov 2005 to set up the Retinal department with funding and support from the SIGHT SAVERS INTERNATIONAL.
Ever since, he has been exclusively practicing surgical retina dealing with Retinal reattachment surgeries for Retinal detachments from various causes : most notably the complicated Retinal detachments arising out of proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy / injuries and Trauma / complications arising out of cataract surgeries / chronic recurrent retinal detachments / paediatric Retinal detachments from various causes / macular diseases etc. and has been extending Retinal surgical training for fellows interested in this faculty.
The availability of such a dedicated and experienced surgeon proved invaluable for the Hospital.

Dr Sudeep Das joined Sankara in September 2016. Formerly, he was Senior Consultant & Head of Dept of Cataract & Refractive Surgery, Narayana Nethralaya, Bangalore. An Alumni of Aravind Eye Care Institutions, Dr Das has held various positions during his chequered career. One of the most notable positions he held was Medical Superintendent, Arogyavaram Eye Hospital, Sompeta, Srikakulam District, AP where he grew the community outreach programme very effectively and enabled the hospital's march towards self sustenance..

Dr Srinivas K Rao DO, DNB, FRCSEd completed his medical training in 1988 and his ophthalmic education in 1991. He has since worked as a Senior Consultant at Sankara Nethralaya for 15 years before accepting the post of Professor in the Chinese University of Hong Kong from September 2004 till October 2006. He has more than 15 years of experience in the management of complex cataracts,corneal and refractive diseases.
He was one of the first surgeons in the country to use complex surgical techniques like limbal stem cell transplants, anterior and posterior lamellar corneal surgical procedures, autografts for pterygia, and keratoprostheses to help patients with end-stage corneal eye disease. Apart from his deep interest in Corneal Diseases, he is also a pioneer in the management of complex cataract-related problems - as in scleral fixated IOLs, management of cataracts in children, dislocated lenses.
He has vast experience in LASIK surgery for the correction of refractive errors, and is experienced in the management of patients with complications after corneal refractive surgery." He has published extensively in these areas and is much sought after as a speaker and teacher. Apart from his clinical practice in Chennai, India, he is also currently a Honorary Consultant to the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Honorary Professor at the Shantou Medical University in China.
Dr Ravindra Mohan obtained his MBBS degree from the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. He underwent residency training in ophthalmology at the Dr Rajendra Prasad Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences at AIIMS, New Delhi. During his period of training, he held many leadership positions including those of Vice-President and President of the Student’s Union, Joint Secretary and later, Secretary of the Ophthalmic Research Association. After residency training, he was a Senior Resident in the division of Oculoplasty, Orbital Surgery and Pediatric Ophthalmology for 3 years. He passed the Fellowship examinations of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in Ophthalmology, clearing the Primary at Edinburgh, U.K. in December 1997 and the final at Edinburgh in May 1998.
He has attended more than 50 professional meetings including as Chairperson & Moderator, both at the national and international level including the International Congress of Ophthalmology, International Congress of Ocular Oncology & Singapore National Eye Centre Meeting. He has over 60 paper presentations and 20 poster and video presentations to his credit. He has delivered over 30 invited talks in various fora in different parts of the country and abroad. He has been involved in public education on various aspects of eye care on television.
He has authored chapters in textbooks and has over two dozen publications to his credit, including those in prestigious journals like Survey of Ophthalmology, Eye, Orbit, Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and the Indian Journal of Ophthalmology. He has been the recipient of the prestigious International Young Scientists Travel Grant of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in 1994. He was awarded, and delivered the Shyam Sunder Prasad Endowment Award Lecture at Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital, Hyderabad in July 2006. Dr.Mohan is a reviewer for the Indian Journal of Ophthalmology and Asian Journal of Ophthalmology, an abstract reviewer for the All India Ophthalmological Society and an invited paper discussant for the Annual Conference of the All India Ophthalmological Society. Dr.Mohan has been closely associated with the activities of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in India, including in the conduct of the FRCS examinations. He was a coordinator of the Indo-Israel Ophthalmic Meeting held in Chennai in December 2005.
Dr.Mohan has many firsts to his credit. He started India’s first superspeciality Thyroid Eye Clinic at Sankara Nethralaya for the comprehensive treatment of this complex, potentially blinding and disfiguring disease. He also established the country’s first Minimally Invasive Lacrimal Clinic and introduced the procedure of Balloon Dacryoplasty for the management of watery eyes in children and adults.
His areas of continued interest in addition to high performance state of the art cataract surgery include comprehensive management of thyroid eye disease, endoscopic lacrimal and orbital surgery, cosmetic and aesthetic eyelid surgery especially ptosis surgery, orbital tumours, cosmetic rehabilitation of the anophthalmic socket, as also the classification and repair of eyelids and adnexal injuries.
Dr K Ravishankar is a Fellow of Royal College of Surgeons(FRCS), Edinburgh, UK and Alumnus of National University of Singapore (NUS). He is the Founder and Medical Director of Sri Ramana Eye Centre.Dr K Ravishankar is backed with more than 3 decades of experience in Ophthalmology. He has served a major part of his professional career with Sankara Nethralaya, Asia's leading tertiary care eye hospital. He last held the position of CEO and Medical Director with this esteemed institution. Dr K Ravishankar has a distinct record of performing more than 30,000 surgeries till date. He is a specialist in Phacoemulsification, Micro Incision Cataract surgery(MICS) and Small Incision cataract surgery(SICS) and treatment of retinal disorders, Pediatric eye care, Squint and Contact lens.Social CommitmentAs part of his commitment towards the society, Dr K Ravishankar plays a responsible role towards eradication of preventable blindness & teaching, not only in India but across the globe. He is the director and mentor of International and Local based NGO’s. Dr.Rajasree is a Senior Consultant at Sankara Eye Hospital from 2006, involved in general ophthalmology and medical retina. She did her M.B.B.S. from Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram. She completed post graduation in ophthalmology from Government Eye Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram in 1994. She underwent training in medical retina at The Eye Research Foundation, Chennai in 1999, where she continued working till 2006. She has been associated with Sankara Eye Hospital, Pammal from 2001.
Dr.P.Beena, MBBS, DO, Fellowship in General Ophthalmology
Dr.P.Beena is a Senior Consultant at Sankara Eye Hospital, involved in general ophthalmology. She did her M.B.B.S. and Diploma in Ophthalmology from Stanley Medical College, Chennai in 1997 & 2004 respectively. She underwent General Ophthalmology fellowship at Sankara Eye Hospital, Pammal in 2006. She has been associated with this Hospital since then.
DR.Balamurugan.P.R. completed his basic medical training in 1994 and post graduation in ophthalmology from Manipal Academy of Higher Education. He was awarded the Gold Medal for the best outgoing student in MS ophthalmology from Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore, Manipal Academy of Higher Education in the year 1998. He did fellowship in Cataract and IOL microsurgery from K.G.hospital and Post Graduate Medical Institute, Coimbatore in 1999. He had passed the basic and clinical exam conducted by International Council of Ophthalmology(ICO) and also completed the Fellowship in Ophthalmology from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow (FRCS) in 2003. He was trained in cornea and external diseases by Dr.Srinivas K.Rao at Sankara eye Hospital, Pammal from 2010 and he further did Cornea observership program at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London, United Kingdom in 2013. He has published in international journals and presented in many conferences. He has vast experience in cataract and his training and years of experience has helped him in the precise diagnosis and treatment of various corneal and external eye diseases.
Dr Shaun Dacosta is a Senior Consultant Ophthalmologist in the medical retina services of Sankara Eye Hospital, Pammal. She did her MS in Ophthalmology from Manipal Academy of Higher education, Manipal, Karnataka. Her main area of interest is retinal imaging. She has worked as the Assistant Director, Research at The Eye Research Foundation, Chennai. She has publications in peer reviewed journals and has presented papers in national level conferences. She has been a reviewer of national and international journals and has authored the book on Spectral Domain OCT- a practical guide.

Dr.Nirupama graduated with MBBS from Chengalpattu Medical College in 2003 as the BEST OUTGOING STUDENT of her batch. She was also awarded "Dr.R.E.S. Muthaiah Memorial Gold Medal" for excellence in Ophthalmology in 2003 by Dr.MGR Medical University. She did her Post-graduation in Ophthalmology from Madras Medical College, Govt. Ophthalmic Hospital in 2007, came out with flying colours. She has undergone intensive training in Phacoemulsification from Sankara Nethralaya in August 2007. She is a Fellow of International Council of Ophthalmologists (FICO). She has also obtained her FRCS (Glasgow) degree in 2012. After completing a rigorous cataract & general ophthalmology fellowship at Sankara Eye Hospital from 2010-12, she handles the UVEA department of our hospital.
Dr Arthi Dwarakanth is Consultant at the Sankara Eye Hospital, Pammal. Post completion of her MBBS from the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Belgaum in 2002, Dr. Arthi pursued her DNB (Ophthalmology) at The Eye Research Foundation, Vijaya Hospital, Chennai, successfully completing the Diplomate in 2008. In addition, she was made a Fellow of the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO-California) in 2012 and completed her FRCS (Glasgow) in 2015. In 2012, she commenced a fellowship in General Ophthalmology at Sankara Eye Hospital and continued as a Consultant with Independent Charge. In 2014, she joined the institute’s Department of Orbit and Oculoplasty. She has resigned her job in July 2020 and rejoined as visiting Consultant.
