In response to a serious need for healthcare services in Pammal, Sri Sankara Health Centre was established in December 1984 and started as an outpatient clinic.
In 1988 M/s. Appaswamy Real Estates gifted 26 thousand sqft land at Sri Sankara Nagar for the construction of a hospital building
In 1990 a 20 bed general hospital was commissioned with the funds generated through Rotary Club’s efforts. The Hospital catered to the needs of general medicine, maternity and surgery
In 1993 the hospital was upgraded to 60 beds.
December 1994 His Holiness Sri Sankara Vijayendra Saraswathi Swamigal of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam launched the Kannoli-Vision Saver Project of Rotary Club of Madras Fort . Thus, Eye care became a part of this general hospital
In 1997 this hospital was converted into an exclusive ophthalmic hospital to provide comprehensive high quality eye care especially to the rural poor in the districts of Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur, Chennai and Chittoor (AP). Community Ophthalmology became the first services of this hospital
in 2003, this hospital built a ward on the second floor to accommodate camp patients and two modern operation theatres, one with four microscopes & eight tables and another with one microscope & two tables. The OPD was also extended & revamped with modern ophthalmic equipments.
In October 2004, 50,000 surgeries were completed
In 2005, OPD was computerized. Addition of 2000sqft was constructed to accommodate patients in the first and second floor.
Government of India provided accreditation to the Hospital for conducting DNB courses in 2005
2006 saw the start of Medical Retinal services and this also marked the beginning of the Hospital moving towards tertiary care apart from Cataract and Glaucoma. In Jan 2007, surgical retina services were started and the first surgery was carried out by our Managing Trustee, Dr P Janakiraman.
In June 2008, Eye Bank services were launched with facilities created for collection, storage and transplanting of cornea.
By 2010 the Hospital had become a multi specialty eye care institution with the launching of Pediatric and Orbit Oculoplasty services. The range of services offered by the Hospital extended across all sub-specialties and covered both medical and surgical services
A milestone in Cataract surgeries was reached when Dr Kauser Parveen performed the 100,000th surgery on Smt Kuppammal on 27th October 2007
Sankara Academy of Ophthalmology was started in 2011 to provide short term and long term Fellowship training. Dr Animesh Mistry from Bangladesh was the first candidate for Short term SICS training. Over the next two years almost 60 Opthalmologists underwent training through this Academy

2013 has been an eventful year with the Founder Trustee, Rtn S Visvanathan being honoured for Life-time achievement by many organizations , acceptance of our proposal to start an Eye Hospital at Samarjhala village in Ganjam District of Odisha by the Government of Odisha and the start of UG and PG Courses in Optometry affiliated to Bharathiar University
